I am using photoshop elements and until yesterday everything worked fine. Today when I try to save for web I get this message

Could not complete this operation because an assertion has failed.

I went on the website and found this

http://support.adobe.com/devsup/devsup.nsf/docs/52489.htm

(Incase the link doesn't work)

Known Issue: An assertion has failed in my saveOptimized command

Summary
An assert failure during a saveOptimized command is most likely due to the loaded image being in the CMYK color space. The image could also be corrupt.

Issue
My saveOptimized command is failing in Adobe Server with the following error messages:
[INFO] Executing: <saveOptimized name="nologo" appendExtension="true" />
[ERROR] Could not complete this operation because an assertion has failed.
[CRITICAL] Could not handle the request because the command 'saveOptimized' failed to execute properly

Applies to
Adobe Graphics Server
Adobe Document Server

Solutions

1. Make sure the image is in the RGB color space.
The saveOptimized command only works on images in the RGB color space. Check the image you loaded in Photoshop or Illustrator to see if it's RGB or CMYK. If it's CMYK, convert it in Photoshop or Illustrator or use the convertProfile command to convert it to RGB before using the saveOptimized command.

Note: The saveOptimized command is used to prepare graphics for the Web which have to be in the RGB color space. The saveContent command can be used to save graphics in PSD or TIFF formats which can be either RGB or CMYK.

2. Make sure the image isn't corrupt.
Another possible cause is a corrupt image--such as the file having been truncated, etc. Try to open the file in Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator. If these applications have a problem opening the file, so will Adobe Server.

3. Make sure the image is in a format supported by Adobe Sever.
See the "File and Content Formats" table on the first page of Chapter 1 of the Commands Reference.

I figured out where RGB and it is selected but none of the other options are there. They have different names. Anyone have any suggestions???

I realize I am probably in the wrong area for this question but I don't know where else to put it. It's totally unrelated to auctiva but I am hoping someone here might have a suggestion. I am down to my last resort which is go "walk quietly to the basement, get the 16 pound sledge and smash this thing to bits."

Save some aggravation and do not use that option, and do not save anything using PSD. Resize yourself (Image>Resize). You also have more control that way.

Thats what I normally do. My scanner is set at 100dpi, then I resize the length or width which ever is smaller to 500 pixels. Then click save for web and that change the dpi to 72, but I guess I could just set the scanner to 75 dpi. It won't let me use 72. No biggie right. Just have to get used to clicking save instead of save for web.

Thanks.

I would just leave it at 100dpi and resize to 500 pixels in PE.
I know you are going to ask about dpi. I got a headache thinking about it so I got you this basic article about it:
