I'm having trouble with store categories in a new store

Under inventory, add/manage categories, the categories (i.e. "Jewelry and Watches") I added do not show under the "Current Categories" area. When I try to add "Jewelry and Watches" I get a warning box stating "The category you attempted to add already exist in your category tree".

There were there earlier, but are gone now.
