Can I update or change a template on an active item?

I have so many listings with people watching and if I want to change the template or description at all it wont let me. Am I doing it wrong? I hate to loose all those links from customers "watching" on the my ebay pages and links just to change some verbiage or templates in my listings.
Is there anything I can do???
