Custom Template & Hosting Images Externally

Is there a trick to using externally hosted images with a custom template? When I try to schedule one, I get an error (can't look now cuz system is down, but something about missing fields I believe), but if I just post it it seems to work fine. Also, if I change to Auctiva hosted images, everything works fine and I can even schedule listings.

I just gave in and decided to use Auctiva hosted images, but I see so many people saying their images aren't showing up that I worry this may not be a good idea. How unreliable is Auctiva's image hosting really? It's easier to just use their hosting, but auctions with no images don't sell well either
