How to use image tags correctly

Okay,
I have the custom template and I want the click to supersize images placed in my desired position. I have used just the {image1} placed where I wanted it. That gave me a red x. Next I tried the {image1_url400x300} tag and that gave me pics but they won't supersize. How exactly am I supposed to use these tags for the click to supersize? Anyone...your help is much appreciated.
