Obviously there are many ways to build a template. Ones that have images running along the far right and left borders are the type that are probably taking up some of that valuable real estate that you are talking about. My suggestion to you is to avoid these templates. If you were to go in and remove these images you will probably have to do quite a bit of work to make things look right. My suggestion is to stick with templates that use a background color, maybe a header and footer image, and possibly a narrow left and right border. Another suggestion is to only place your images in single file vertically or to use smaller images paired, especially when using a template with images for the left and right borders.
