I first became aware of this type of scam in 2002 when I was bidding on an old fishing reel. The bidding got nuts and hit $300. The item was worth about $100.
Why would someone bid it to $300?
Later I found out why, they filed a paypal complaint and shipped back an empty box. That was back when the seller could leave a negative and she did and let everyone know she'd been scammed with the empty return box trick; of course paypal gave the buyer a full refund.
The only way sellers can protect themselves from this type of scam is buy accepting money orders for the payment; now ebay has taken that away.
The door has been swung wide open for scammers.
1. No money orders.
2. No negative feedback.
3. 100% refund available through PayPal disputes. Just ship back an empty box and you can have a refund; time to do a little shopping
Anyone that sells anything on ebay worth more than a few bucks is a fool.
