is grabbing the source code probably the most reliable method of including the template and everything at the same time or is there a better way?

If you're talking about a standard template, perhaps, depending on how standard they are and how you've constructed your listing.
For example, just tried Auctiva's Liquid Blue Template on Google Base and it worked fine except it didn't like this unsupported code:
<STYLE> a.imagelink {color:#24478F;}blahblahblah </STYLE>

Deleted it and all was well.
My listing, however, only had a picture and a table in the editor box and that was all good with Base because it supports those tags.
From Google:

What types of HTML tags can I use in my item's description?
You may use the following HTML tags within your item's description:
A, ABBR, ACRONYM, ADDRESS, B, BDO, BIG, BLOCKQUOTE, BR, CAPTION, DD, DEL, DIV, DL, DT, EM, FONT, H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6, HR, I, IMG, INS, KBD, LI, OL, P, Q, SAMP, SMALL, STRONG, SUB, SUPCODE, TABLE, TBODY, TD, TH, TR, TT, UL, VAR
Please know that all tags will be checked to ensure they're valid. At this time, we're only supporting HTML in items posted individually through the Google Base form.
