Actually, sometimes a gif is much smaller than a jpeg, and vice-versa. It all depends on the makeup of the image. If you have just a few colors in the graphic, a gif will be a smaller file. For images with a lot of colors, gradations, etc., you'll get much better results and a smaller file as a jpeg.
