Template too narrow

My template is too narrow-- with 18 pt Verdana, I get only 5-9 words per line of description. I would like to expand the template into the column underneath 'store categories' at left. I would also appreciate less padding inside the template itself. Any solutions to get this template wider?
(I use a widescreen monitor, but I doubt that changes anything)
