Your best bet is to purchase the domain names through a service such as domaindiscover.com (good prices) or networksolutions (expensive and a rip off but they offer you control) and then you can direct the domain names to wherever you want.

Having more than one name doesn't hurt (other than your wallet) and helps drive more traffic to your site.

I have 5 domain names going to my site... it is worth the $10 a year for registration.
