I have also found that images shrunk in the jpg format can also suffer colour distortion.

Originally I thought it was a camera problem but since then I have found that when a picture of a particularly shiny red object was shrunk in this format it can can result in small dark patches in the red surfaces.

The jpg compression algorithm is lossy, meaning info is lost but usually it more than compensates for this in producing very compact and fast loading images for use on a web page.

However it strikes me that with all this supersizing (which I use a lot) it now shows up the deficiencies of the jpg compression method. We are probably using it for much larger images than was ever envisaged and on even larger high resolution screens than ever before. The effect of info loss can now be visible and can take a bit of working around to show some items to thier best on a listing.
