Does anyone have any idea what the heck this thing is? I have 3 of them. They sat on my uncle's desk w/his other engineering stuff, but may have nothing to do w/engineering at all. Anybody know?

Hmmm, odd looking thing. The clamps don't look like they are long enough to meet, so it's designed to hold something of a minumum size. It's not stable enough, by the look of it, to be used to hold something while it is worked on, i.e. like a vice, so I reckon it is for decorative purposes, maybe in it's own right, or to hold something for display. But hey, what do I know?

I agree. It looks like it was made to hold a specimen for display purposes. Like a large mineral, or large sea shell for example. Or basically anything that will fit. Let your imagination run wild.
