Hi!

Yes these are common. There are only a handfull of search engines that matter and many of the lesser one's will aggregate data from the others. Often when you use these site submits that promise heaps of Search Engines it just results in spam over time.

Search Engines can drive good traffic to a site but in order for it to happen most of the time specific SEO is important (search engine optimization). I read perhaps a year back or so that about 6% of all websites indexed by Google get proper ranking, good ranking and it is nearly completely due to:

1. The site software used
2. Complete lack of proper SEO or site planning etc.

I'm actually very very good at Search Engine Optimization. I'm a software engineer by trade as well.
