I am not new to eBay, but I have noticed that the last couple of times I have tried to buy something I run into instant bid raises. It is usually only a dollar, but this process will dollar you to death until the auction ends.

What is going on? I thought it was illegal for a seller to shill his own goods? I also am not able to watch the countdown clock. When I go to the item for bid it always shows the time left, but it does not change?

What in the hell is going on? Has eBay turned into a hightech scam or is there really a way ordinary people can buy things on eBay?

You're probably getting outbid by these small amounts because the previous bidder bid a higher amount than what you just bid. They had already placed the higher bid, but eBay only displays enough of the highest bid to outbid the lower bid.

If Person A bid $7, and Person B bids $10, eBay will only up Person B's bid enough to outbid Person A - $8 (or $7.50). Then when you try to beat $8 and you bid $9, Person B's original $10 bid will bump it to $10 and - voila - you just got outbid instantly.

Good luck!
