CD hassle

For some reason my Lite-On DVD-R/RW which I used to be able to write or listen CD's to now says unsupported format as it will only work with my DVD's now. I have Cyberlink PowerDVD 5 as the software and Nero to write my CD's. I have tried other software as well but Lite-On will not recognize a CD so is it Lite-On or the PowerDVD software

I haven't loaded anything new and there are no new driver updates and I can't afford to update the software

Any ideas what is happening and how I can fix it.

I think it is the Lite-On DVD-R/RW unit as I uninstalled the PowerDVD 5 software and it still would not play a CD but it played a DVD.

Hello Al,

We have heard others with Lite-on products complaining that they have had breakdowns and inability to play DVD's after only a year of owning the product.
Do you have a warranty or customer support available?

I think over time the lasers in those wear out from buring cd's. Usually though I'd think that would only affect writing cd's. So if it doesn't read either maybe it's another sort of failure.

Since dvd/cd burners cost about $40 the typical fix is to trash the broken one and put in a new one.

A good place for computer hardware is http://www.newegg.com They have good prices and fast service.

The guarantee was only good for one year and I have had for over 2 years. I guess I will be checking out ebay for another unit.
