Hi to you all, just want to know if i make an alteration to a listing, say add new photos, will that listing be "taken down" from the site whilst checks are carried out?

There is definitely a possibility that eBay will have to "re-index" your listings to appear in the appropriate search results pages after you make the aforementioned revision, however, I'm uncertain of the exact criteria that would cause them to do this. Therefore, I recommend contacting eBay's customer support department for further clarification on this matter.
According to the following page of eBay's help index, http://pages.ebay.com/help/find/questions/wheres-my-item.html, it is implied that they would only take this action if the title of the listing is revised, but I've heard reports of them doing this in response to other revisions, such as the appendage of the scrolling gallery, so I can't say for sure.
