Customising Header and side bars with images. With custom CSS

I want to customize my website header and left sidebar with 2 images, but I have no idea about CSS. There is nothing about it on:

http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_examples.asp

under: CSS Navigation Bars

I hope you could give me an example of it.

In the default CSS is it site bar1 or 2 I'm trying to change? And at what point to insert the html? I want the image to repeat vertically in the site bar.

And I need an option for the website header to be resised- Length and width.
