I recently signed on with Auctiva and haven't launched any auctions with it yet, so I don't know well it actually works when the pressure's on, though I did notice their gallery popped up on the bottom of some of my existing auctions. Right now I'm paying about $7 a month for that and similar sales tools on Vendio. I'm amazed to know that I can get basically the same stuff as Vendio but for free on Auctiva. Thanks for that. But I'm wondering, if all this great stuff is free, how does Auctiva survive? Lastly, I appreciate the free storefront. It would be a great thing to have a lot more templates available and to be able to list anything. I'd even pay a transaction fee for it. Anyway, I hope that when I do list with Auctiva that it is better than Vendio, which doesn't integrate with PayPal shipping.

Auctiva really should put a big link on the front of their page that explains how it works. It's almost like they try to hide it for some reason...

Basically, everything is completely FREE to use, HOWEVER... Auctiva sells alternative shipping insurance by a company called U-PIC. They get a discount on this insurance, and this discount is passed on to you.

For example, a buyer wants insurance on a total purchase of $25. They pay $1.30 for the insurance. Depending on your settings, Auctiva automatically insures the package, or you manually purchase insurance through Auctiva's "Transactions" screen. Auctiva only charges you $1.05 for the insurance, leaving you with a profit of $.25. Auctiva gets the insurance from U-PIC for less than the $1.05 that they charged you, so the difference is their profit. You then get billed from Auctiva monthly for your outstanding balance.

It's a pretty brilliant idea, if you ask me.

Edit: It should be noted that U-PIC insurance is far superior to USPS's offering.

Go there and click on the "Shipping" link. You can also go to U-Pic's web site for more info:

If you have any question at all, the customer service people at U-Pic are very easy to deal with. Their toll free number is even posted on the home page.

From personal experience, I can tell you that U-Pic's insurance covers ANY package, whether it has tracking/delivery confirmation or not. This includes international shipments that would not normally be insurable through USPS (i.e. almost all). I've filed a few claims with them without a hitch so far.
