I do appreciate this problem, as I had a similar problem with coins.
I have a suggestion that might help. When you hover (mouse-over) the thumbs in the pop-up selection window, are you getting a small detail blue frame showing for each image? I get the Full Name, Size, Width, Height, and Folder for each with mouse-over. A good file naming convention coupled with upload to a specific Folder might work well. That might even work better than any increase in thumb size, as details could still be mistaken with a larger thumb.
A mouse-over treatment that gives a larger thumb in that blue box might also be a good alternative, perhaps as a clickable selection on the pop-up window to give the 400 x 300 image.
