Finding the answer to this question will be, my advisor tells me, of great benefit to us all.

I am told that when I name an image (on my own computer) and upload it in to certain programs, the image retains the name I gave it in some capacity, which means that any link containing my image I am FAR more likely to show up in google search results.

I believe it is called 'tagging,' or 'html tags.'

However, I am also told that when I upload my photos to auctiva, I do not retain the names I gave the photos.

Does anyone know how I might be able to retain the name I give to my images, and thus insert 'html tags' in to my listings?

Thanks in advance...

See Store tab and "META Tags". Those are for your Store, which is probably a more reliable and permanent way to drive traffic to your products than individual listings.

Oh...and Auctiva assigns a number to the uploaded photo in place of the file name. The name is retained (see your Image library), but I'm pretty sure it doesn't appear in the loaded HTML code that's set to ebay during listing. I've never checked the description code for tags, but not saying none exist from Auctiva.
