In closed listings... when I re-list an item, it's still in closed listings.
Besides manually removing it, is there a way to automate this or another way of going about relisting?

The Closed Listings page of your account is a record of items that have closed on eBay and relisting an item from there or elsewhere would not remove the entry on the Closed Listings page. Relisting an item would provide that next posting a new entry on Closed Listings when that closed as well. If you wish to remove items from the list on Closed Listings, you will need to delete them manually.
You may want to have a look at using an Auto Relist profile to automate relisting, but again, this would not remove an entry from the Closed Listings pages of your account. If you have not already done so, please see our tutorial regarding Auto Relist profiles:
