I sent a message to support, and just got a stupid form letter response.

I am sorry to hear that you are encountering difficulty with an API error. Please note that the API errors come to us directly from eBay and we display them in your account for your convenience, however we have no control over their content or occurrence.
It sounds like there is a specific image in your listing or listings that does not meet eBay's current image size requirements. Please review the listing encountering this error by clicking on the Edit link beneath the images in the image selection area of our lister page. If any image is less than 500 px on a side, it would cause this API error to occur.
If you are unable to locate the particular image, please reply back to the support case you refer to asking us to take a look at the related images so we can further assist you with this issue.
