Having worked in IT for 15 years, I do have to say than when things go big time wrong, it's all hands to the pumps to get things sorted - there isn't always time to let folks know what's going on, you don't always know what's gone wrong and at that point it is impossible for you to know how long it's going to take to fix.

At some point when you move servers you're gonna have to switch over which means there is a window of time when something (or everything) isn't available. It's kinda inevitable.
