I assume they are jpegs and a jpeg uses a compressed format. However, the amount of compression possible varies with the composition of the image, and can vary greatly between images. 100K-150K per image is probably a good average range for normal pictures with low to moderate compression, so you're just about right.

If you don't need the full 1024x768 Supersize, you could resize the pictures lower and save some space.
