all my relists for dresses are failing because style is not specified.
not sure if style was specified and fell off or if this is a new requirement or was this yet another weekend glitch.

I'm sorry to hear about your recent relisting difficulties. I reviewed a couple of your recent relist attempts that failed for the reason you mentioned and confirmed that "Style" is *not* currently a required Item Specific for the category in question, so it appears that the API error eBay returned upon rejecting these listings was invalid.
I just posted a new listing and a relist using this category through my own account without specifying anything for “Style” within the Item Specifics section and they were both accepted by eBay, so hopefully that is indicative that this was just a temporary error which eBay has since resolved.

the asterisk requiring style was no long evident today on the auctiva custom item specifics section for dresses.
to be clear, when i relisted (individually) auctiva was showing style with an asterisk as required. that changed today.
