I wanted to respond to a recent posting about the Auctiva insurance issue but the topic was closed. I hope that doesn't mean it's an "off limits" topic.

With my first week of listings I already ran into this confusing insurance issue. I had an international buyer. My eBay settings are set to only offer insurance to US purchasers.

But the international buyer used Auctiva checkout, and was able to add the insurance anyway. OK, I thought that was not a big deal, but then I printed a Paypal packing slip, and it stated "0" on the insurance line. So I had to hand-write on the invoice that there was indeed insurance (since the buyer mentioned and Auctiva showed they had bought it) and to overlook what the packing invoice said.

So I'm concerned that either way I look like an idiot or a liar to the buyer.

Is it that difficult for these sites and programs to be synched or at least somewhat consistent? They certainly seem to have no problem transferring money back and forth between them, so why do details like this fall through the cracks?

More importantly, what should my settings be on each site or how should I handle this in the future to avoid more potential mix-ups?

Hi Cameo,

When you are using Auctiva Checkout and accepting payments via Paypal, there are a couple possible discrepancies that may be apparent between the Auctiva Checkout details and those reflected on your Paypal payment notifications. The possible discrepancies to look out for are as follows:

1) When a customer purchases shipping insurance through Auctiva Checkout, the resulting Paypal payment notification will not reflect that insurance was purchased, and the insurance cost will be lumped in with the shipping cost in the "Shipping" field.

2) When a customer pays for an item via Paypal through the Auctiva Checkout system, the shipping service that is listed on the resulting Paypal payment notification will be the first shipping service offered on the listing and not necessarily the actual shipping service selected by the buyer.

While it would certainly be ideal if we could adjust our checkout system to account for these issues, unfortunately, the eBay/Paypal API does not currently provide the tools that would be necessary for us to make such a development.

To avoid similar confusion with respect to your future transactions, I recommend relying on your Auctiva "Checkout Complete" emails or the "Checkout Details" links on your Auctiva "Transactions" page to verify the shipping and insurance information pertaining to your Auctiva Checkout transactions.

Thanks, Mike, for your quick response.

I did handwrite on the invoice that the insurance was included in the shipping cost printed on the packing slip, I just didn't think it looked professional that way. Do you know if there is any way to manually "edit" the Paypal packing slip before printing it out?

Also, I'm curious why eBay's settings about not offering insurance to international buyers didn't override Auctiva's settings?

I think that is where a large part of my confusion and concern comes in - which site's settings are the "final word." It would be helpful for me to know exactly how more experienced sellers have toggled their settings on each of these respective sites.

Thanks again.
Hi Cameo,

You're welcome! In order to use Auctiva Checkout, you just need to have the Auctiva Checkout setting enabled in your account. In addition, if you would like to offer combined shipping discounts on your listings, you need to check the box next to check the box next to "Apply my eBay combined shipping profile" in the "Checkout Options" section when creating your listings through Auctiva.

The only specifications you need to make in your eBay selling preferences to ensure that Auctiva Checkout will properly handle your sales are those pertaining to combined shipping discounts and combined insurance. Once you have specified these preferences, when your buyers purchase multiple items in a single transaction, shipping and insurance will be handled according to these specifications.

Whenever you make changes to your combined shipping discount rules that are specified within your eBay account, you can update that information within your Auctiva account by clicking the "Ebay Settings" link under the "My Account" tab within your account, and then clicking the "Update Combined Shipping Discounts From eBay" link on the ensuing page.

For single item transactions, whether or not insurance is offered should be taken from the insurance specification you defined when creating the listing. If you specified insurance as "Not Offered" and your buyer was still able to purchase insurance, we will need to investigate further to determine what happened. If this was the case, please contact our customer support department and we'll be happy to check it out.

I'm not quite sure if there is a way to edit the packing slips that Paypal provides. For further clarification as to whether or not that is a possibility, I recommend contacting Paypal's customer support department.
