Just to let everyone know. I don't know if this is a new one or not but I haven't seen or heard of it before. I received this e-mail this morning;

Like a big-#ss dumbie I clicked on the link and was taken to a regular eBay sign-in page. Still being dumb I entered my ID & password. When nothing happened I finally realized that I had been had. I immediately changed my password for eBay, PayPal & Auctiva.
I then checked my next e-mail which was a member's question in a very official looking eBay form. The question was "Do you take paypal, Thanks". Every one of my auctions state plainly that I prefer PayPal so I got suspicious this time. I forwarded both mails to eBay and of course they were both spam.
The members ID on the two e-mails were different but the one on the second one seems to be legitimate with good feedback. Anyone have a suggestion, should I contact this member to let him know that his ID is being compromised?

1) I wouldn't contact the seller. If you sent the e-mail to spoof@ebay.com, ebay now has control and will handle notifications, account cancellations, etc.

2) Depending on your mail program (I use Thunderbird which is made by the same folks that make the Mozilla browser), you should be able to see the link destination before you click on it.
Thanks for the reply Joe. I did use spoof@ebay.com to report this so I guess its time to forget about it and be more careful next time.
I use AOL e-mail and I can see link destination but I doubt that it would have made me suspicious if I had looked. The destination is as long as my 17" screen is wide and filled with references to ebay and dispute etc., then ends with cgi.ebay.com\, so if I had looked I would likely still have thought it was for real.
I get tons of different spoofs everyday. My "mail" forwards them automatically to my trash. But once in a while, a new one gets through.

I'm in the habbit now of checking the return address as you all mentioned above. There is definitely a lot of it going around.

I used to forward these to spoof@ebay.com, but with the high-volume of these I receive, not to mention that regardless of wether or not I forward it to spoof@, they still come.

Oh, well, part of eBay life.
I have all of my email accounts to where I can see headers.

Just because an email says it's such and such or from such and such ISP doesn't mean that's where it came from or whom it's from.

That works every time for me.

If you're ever doubtful about an email, always check your messages in My Messages to be sure. If it's legit, it'll be right there. I very seldom answer the questions that come via email that look like they come via contact member. I ALWAYS go through My eBay and My Messages.

I forward all spoofs/spams to ebay/Paypal and the more.

I've recently had to report a false email to PayPal and also (possible) money laundering attempt to both PayPal and Ebay. That's right, a potential buyer--and I use this term loosely--wanted me to send $900 overseas. She would pay me $200. Very scary. I'm often afraid to open my mail. And I have responded to messages through my regular email account. Probably not a good idea. I need to get in the habit of checking messages directly on Ebay. Thanks for the warning!!!

Yep, me too. I reported and went along my way.

I got contacted by the viceroy (say what? <smile>Wink of Nigeria also wanting me to trust him with the same < cough> scam.

I report and say..Move along, nothing to see.

Check headers and view your messages on eBay and you'll be safe.

My spam has been going up dramatically lately. I've gotten several of the "question from member" emails, some claiming they're going to report me for not responding to their emails or others asking me about an item I've supposed bought. As if I need another cell phone. I wasn't so good about reporting them before, but I do now. I am encouraged a bit by AOLs actions too, though I'm hardly a fan of AOL. We can only hope.

I get close to 10 a day on 4 different accounts.

I don't do mess with forwarding to Paypal. Only ebay. And I also report them to the gub'ment. I'm not sure if they do a hill o beans about it..but I do. They're already in my contacts so it's fast and painless.

I have considered at times just hitting the delete button, but I think to myself, what if this person can be caught before another falls for his ploy and so I just zip them to the proper department and go on bout life. (I know someone that clicked a link, they got not only the eBay but also Paypal and her financial info...SCEERY)

I wonder how many my filters catch that I don't see...hmmmmmmmm...interesting thought.
