First of all I want to know on Capt. Binghamton, "Is that guy naked?". I gotta tell ya, he's no Brad Pitt!

Anyway I am here to ask about hgmartin's suggestions. I have Norton, have for a long time; so what would you suggest: I disable it then go get AVG or get AVG first. As for the other two are they in addition to AVG or instead of. I have XP so there is a build in Firewall, is that sufficent? I run Ad-Aware from time to time, is that sufficent? Thanks for the advise!!!

I'll be innarested in old H.G's answer. When I had to do it, I had to reformat my whole hard-drive with all zeros and reinstall the operating system. As well as everything else, too. The Norton uninstaller leaves all kinds of crap in the registry.

Not everybody has problems with Norton. If they don't, there's no reason to switch, unless they don't like paying for the subscrption renewals.

Geekette here!
I SWEAR by AVG and Sygate Firewall. Windows XP and I want my own firewall that I can set up the specs.

Both are free downloads and haven't failed me yet.

McAfee was a PIA! Norton? Schmorton.

I use Spybot-Search and Destroy. Ad-adware SE Personal for scanning spyware and such. Spyware Blaster for auto-blocking of sites which could hurt your computer. Shoot the Messenger for auto-disabling of the Messenger which comes loaded with Windows Programs. I also use Toni Arts Easy Cleaner. For heavy duty cleaning I use CCleaner. The last one gets rid of the .dat files.

Have you scanned with pandasoft? That works well, too.

Price for a clean computer with the above software? Nada! I have auto updates set up with some of the softwares and with others I update regularly every friday morning like clockwork.

I hope you get everything worked out.
Hope some of the links have helped.

CB? I am 'sceeeered to ask, too. But..uh, is the guy nekkid in the pic? C'mon you can do better than that? Perhaps I should start the chant, bring back Captain Binghamton, Captain Binghamton. <smile> How bout a sit in?

Head about to hit the keyboard in FL,
Donna

Well, the ol' sailor never means to give offense, even through ugliness, so I'll have to come up with somethin' else, I guess. Maybe a pitcher of Sid. He's got 'is own Jac...Juc..Jezzu....his own whirlpool, you know.

Norton programs scatter more garbage into the registry than any other. The programs are about 75% larger than they need to be. It has interfered with other programs and crashed systems even while it was not running. As Capt said sometimes it is nessary to reformat and do a clean install. First try disabling running at start-up.

As far as the xp firewall it is not very robust and it only blocks incoming packets. The free one mentioned above is fine. I prefer Armor2 because of it ease of setup especially with a LAN. It is also tops in protection.

The free spyware removers are ok. I have used Spy Sweeper to fix problems where the others have failed. One example is where one of the free ones removed a maleware but left registry entries. At every start-up you would get a missing dll file error. I purposely put the maleware back on and removed with Spy Sweeper and it removed all registry entries pointing to the maleware to load, no more errors. The real time guards are superior to others. It takes more programming and testing, that is why it is not free.

AVG always seems to beat out the not for free ones. I will pay for something over a free one if it is better but here there is no reason to.

AS I said, computer geek, not grammar expert.

Capt, is that picture from the X Files?

Thanks for the link. I have had this norton setup for just under a yr now, ready for renewal !

But, I am nervous to have no protection on my pc. The last PC I had was so badly infected with adware, spyware from adding gator, that I ended up throwing it away.

I use all free stuff, regularly run scans and don't have any problems - Avast! for virus, Ad Aware for Spyware, Spyware Blaster for more coverage. All recommended by Kim Kommando.

I don't blame you...I'd NEVER use a computer without having protection. (instead of safe sex it's safe computing, ha)

I highly recommend Kim Komando. I get her daily email hints tips and have gotten some really good info from them.

Take care, Donna

CB...at least you didn't type "homely" southern wench! <wink>

How bout one of those Pirate Pouffy shirts? You seem secure in your maleness to handle a foo-foo shirt. <smile> Well, are you?

How lucky the better half of CB is to get a pic of you on the throne? Might I ask where your ceptor is? And crown?

Jacuzzi's? As long as Sid can make some of his homemade brand bubbles, he can have one of those jacuzzi's no matter which pool of water he's in. <wink>

Note to CBs better half...keep the pics coming.
<smile>
