Hey guys.. I just received an email that looked like it was sent through ebay.
member shaunaxpwns. It asked if I accepted paypal, and that they were very interested. Since it did not look like other messages I had received from ebay(red flag), I checked myEbay messages. there was nothing new there.. another red flag.I clicked on the item #, and it took me to the ebay login page ( I didn't log in, bc it should take you just to the page right?)I clicked on the member name, and ebay said there was no such member. I also checked the item number that was in the email, and it doesn't match anything that I have.
Am I right to think this is a scam. Should it be reported to Ebay?
Thanks.

Michelle, eBay has a very simple and effective process for this. What you need to do is forward the "fake" (eBay calls them "spoof") email to spoof@ebay.com eBay will then send you an acknowledgement email and will investigate. It typically only takes a couple of days. They won't tell you what they are doing about it but they will verify if it is "spoof" or not. This has happened to me a couple of times and within days of eBay confirming it is "spoof" the emails stop coming. I guess they do something to convince the sending party to stop.'

Hi Michelle

These spoofs are likely to be from a person whose real address is disguised, never respond to them just forward to spoof@ebay.com as Joey says.

If in doubt always check in your my messages if it is there it is probably valid, only answer them from there.

It is likely you are being targeted at random and unless the true identity can be determined such that thier ISP blocks them they will just keep coming.

A lot of spamming and spoof mails come from countries with turn a blind eye to this which includes Nigeria, China and some eastern European countries, so the likelihood of any action occurring to stop them is unlikely.

Even if blocked many others will take their place, that's life I'm afraid Smile
Hi Shelz013,

I have even heard of messages recieved thru ebay's 'my messages' as being phishing attempts. Rare but not impossible. I would run all my anti spyware scans while my computer was in safe mode, were I you, since you DID click on something contained in the email.

If you need help with this, post back. But better to be safe than sorry.
Hi Shelz013 - You were right in not "logging in", as it was almost certainly a fake login page and would have given your login info to the scammers, resulting in an account hijack.

Member_8880 is correct in stating that ebay's message system cannot be trusted, as it is also used for fake emails. Bottom line: never click on a suspect email link, and if you do, do not "log in" or otherwise give personal information.
I have even had emails come to me after sending an invoice to a winner. The email appears that it came from me with a cc: to me.

It had a copy of the invoice to the winner with accurate information and then a link to PayPal to print a shipping label. It was a fraud. If I had clicked on the Paypal shipping link the next thing would have been a request for my accout and password.

The point is I never go to PayPal or any of my fancial sites from any email no matter how authentic it looks. It is just as easy to exit the email and go directly to my account online.

The email I mentioned above was sent to spoof@ebay.com and was confirmed to be fraudlent.
hi shelz how good were you not logging in to that email ...well i wasnt so lucky i logged in and 3 days later i went to check my listings and someone had stolen my account and listed 5 cars for sale under my account ...this has caused me a whole lot of problems thankfully ebay saw it was a scam and helped me out but gee it pays to be aware of these scammers ...i just hope this never happens to me again it was very stressful ...cheers Eve
