Hi folks, hope someone out there can help me with some photo issues... My main concern is loss of clarity after pics have been uploaded to auctiva. I am aware that size and mp will affect resolution... however, for me it seems that my pics are ultra clear only before they are uploaded.

What am I doing wrong? I have a 7.2 mp Sony cybershot with a fine and standard setting and shoot under filtered flourescent lighting in a light tent with a tripod. I do set the camera to the flourescent setting.

One more thing, this may matter. My pics are ultra clear after "supersize photo" is clicked. It is only when they are in the smaller regular size do they look blurry. Are my pics too large or too small when uploaded??

I recall seeing that a auctiva member, on an auctiva template, had his/ her pics pre-supersized. How does one select supersize as the default? is is even possible? I want large clear photos when the page is loaded.

Thanks for your time- Marc

Hi 31fortwo,

Here's a thought! Dunno really..cuz it's just a wild-a_s-guess!

But Auctiva says they "resize" photos to 400x300px for listings. Now your camera and photo-equipment sounds way superior to my old camera stuff..so maybe your photos are really way higher in resolution than auctiva expects to have to "resize" (meaning that their algorithms could be messing with the resized-renderings. (?)

The clue here is that you say when you supersize then the photos are fine. Ok! Well auctiva apparently doesn't 'mess' with the supersize photos (in other words, doesn't 'resize' them). Therefore you can deduce the original photos arrived, and are ok.. But because they are very high-density, the computer-graphics algorithms which are evoked for 'resizing' may be somehow choking on your photos for that very reason.

And BTW.. what are you using to 'upload' with? Aren't there options for the transport-tool used to upload. I thought there were..but I only ever used the simplest choice which is plain old html transfer (or whatever it is).

suggestion: just try to upload and test a couple shots taken at significantly lower quality (or size). Maybe you'll get a better clue from that!

I dunno..like I said. I'm not an expert here..my input is only really just a WAG.

cheers!
Hi,
Don't know if my suggestion would help but you could give it a try.
Auctiva recommend your pictures should be 1024 x 768 pixels for easier uploading to their image hosting site. I always resize my pics before I start the upload. The camera I use is an Olympus Camedia C70 and so far I have not encountered any problems with the uploads.
I also upload in bulk so that all my images are on the site ready to add to my listings.
Hope this helps.
Bye.
I have also found that images shrunk in the jpg format can also suffer colour distortion.

Originally I thought it was a camera problem but since then I have found that when a picture of a particularly shiny red object was shrunk in this format it can can result in small dark patches in the red surfaces.

The jpg compression algorithm is lossy, meaning info is lost but usually it more than compensates for this in producing very compact and fast loading images for use on a web page.

However it strikes me that with all this supersizing (which I use a lot) it now shows up the deficiencies of the jpg compression method. We are probably using it for much larger images than was ever envisaged and on even larger high resolution screens than ever before. The effect of info loss can now be visible and can take a bit of working around to show some items to thier best on a listing.
