Sparedollar is GONE!
<poof>
If you thought you had migrators when the owner of Tomas mentioned raising his prices..well, the members are angry that the site went poof in the middle of the night with all of their pics. WHOIS states the site has expired.

Another board I'm on is raising heck and persons are stating they are coming here and other places.

On your mark, get set, Servers Up!

Everyone who was online this morning found SD to be poof, gone.

If you can visit the SD boards there is a quasi-explation of sorts.

He had let his hosting expire, he only pays year to year and some sort of issue with his card.

The site came back up around 11:30 my time (EST) and was down from 6:30am (my time)

It's back up and I'm finishing getting everything out.

I may just end up endling 30 day store fixed price listings and reupload at MY cost with the new URLs.

I follow you. Yes that's true. I'm anxious to see how your new servers will do.

And I'm not complaining, especially as Auctiva is something of a "gift horse". So far so good, although my first postings won't occur until this weekend.
I'm not having any problems with speed and Auctiva. What browser are you using? I find IE sucks. <smile> Opera and Mozilla are far superior.

For the sake of all concerned...speed was never a factor with SD. I'm cable modem and fly with both services.

The reason I'm pulling away and out is purely business based.

Could be that there are less pics/templates and more being hosted on SD as persons are pulling them out?

Who knows?

I'm happy that this is a very valid and working solution for me.

I never took the time to put in the host file entry...I shouldn't have to do handstands to view my own files.

Just my two cents,
Donna

I assume you were replying to me (?), except I don't recall mentioning any problems. FWIW I presently have IE 6.0, Opera 8.02, and various Geckos: Mozilla 1.5, Firefox 1.0.7, Netscape 6.2.2 and Netscape 7.2. I use them all, every day. Everybody who writes their own hard-code HTML and CSS should, to make sure the greatest number of customers are presented with a well rendered listing. BTW, all of them have their quirks, but I have no particular problems with any.

Yep, I agree on the cable. However, it doesn't do my customers any good, unless they have it, hence fast-loading is, to an extent, always a concern of mine. Thus far I've looked at several Auctiva listings and didn't see any speed problems at first blush, but I haven't tried on a dial-up yet.

I'm pulling out of SD for the same reason. It's funny, though. Many people, myself included, felt that SD suffered for a long time because $4.95/member/month wasn't enough to be able to afford programmers and support. Now, here we are migrating en masse to an outfit that is free! Oh well, life's too short not to live it in the fast-lane.

You have to wonder how Foo Dog (Shooting Star) survives. I wish Auctiva would buy them out. I'd pay good money to see that.

As far as SD's new-found speed, I think Tt's post above is correct. I thought SD's pic hosting had come back up, but as I now see, it hasn't.

Glad you're happy here. I think it's bad luck to be happy, myself, but I look forward to being satisfied, too. Oops. I just blew my cover. Now you know. I'm really Mick Jagger.

Hmm. Too bad they don't give ratings out for rambling on. I'd be an Admiral. Sorry.
Thanks SO very much for the rambling..I enjoyed it!

I always feel I can learn from others and your posting helped me to understand CSS a little better.

I had another SD'er back in early summer test out my auctions for speed on dialup. One thing I didn't think to ask was to ask for various browsers. I'm hoping just because I view them in different browsers it allows my customers the same look straight across the board.

My auction templates haven't changed since the testing with dialup so I'd hope that would stay the same.

Mick, <smile> Yep...for now I'm "satisfied" with this service.

Keep the postings coming so I can continue to learn.

Thanks, Donna

That's easy when you turn off every feature on the site and nobody can get to it. Lol. I dont think it's faster because of people putting in IP's into their HOSTS file. It think it's faster because most buyers browsing eBay cant see the photos and other things that would normally be slowing it down.

I would be curious if once you remove those host file entries if it stays the same speed.

We've got 16 more dual xeon servers being installed in about 2 weeks. Just as soon as they're delivered. Things aren't all that slow now, but I'm pretty sure that we're going add at lesat 1 more webserver for people using our site to build listings and such. Also we have some things doubled up that we'll put on their own servers. Most of the day the CPU's on our machines are fine. They get a little busy around 7pm, but still have some kick left in them. I'm sure it'll get a little faster. I guess we'll see though and you guys can tell me if you notice the difference when we put them in. That's the real test.

The 'other place' is constantly timing out. It is the only website I go to that does this. I have yet, to have a problem 'speed' wise with, Auctiva. More servers? Faster, you say?

Yippie! Go, Auctiva! Smile
