I gotta tell you, the listing editor is really a piece of @*#&! Is there anyone out in the world of Auctiva that can HONESTLY say they have absolutely NO problems using it whatsoever?

Here's what I have encountered, and put up with, for the last year. The editor can not, or simply does not, know how to format text. You can type in a paragraph of text, highlight it and select the left justify button and NOTHING! Do a preview and the text is centered. Go back to the editor and the text is centered. Highlight again and click ANY justification other than centered and try the preview again. What happens? NOTHING! Still centered.

So now I go into Word and setup the text. Left justified for the description etc. It's all looking good so I cut and paste it into the editor (be sure not to let it clean it up for you!). It seems to look ok but when you do the preview, yup, you guessed it, the text is centered! Go back to the editor and highlight the text and click left justify. Nothing happens. BUT, when I go to the preview now, the text is left justified. OK, I guess I can live with that. But wait, there is an error in the text. So I go into the editor and make the change. Oooops! Big mistake. Now the paragraphs have been stacked together in the preview. No spaces between them. But it looks OK in the editor. Now what?

Go back into Word. Make the changes there. Cut and paste again. Select and rejustify and check the preview. Finally, it looks OK. But when it posts to eBay, it looks a bit different still. Not enough to matter but different just the same.

One other thing, I've been told it's always my templates that are screwing things up. Well, I tested this scenario with not only my templates but about a half a dozen standard Auctiva templates as well. And they look just as jacked up as mine did. In fact, the text was even displayed in completely different justifications within the standard templates. Just too weird.

SO, the million dollar question again, does anyone use this editor successfully? If so, PLEASE enlighten me as to how you do it without resorting to massive quantities of alcohol or prescription drugs. Because the way I see it, this is the biggest flaw in an otherwise respectable application.

Hi Help,

I regret you are having so many problems and I am not sure I am the one to respond to your post. I use the Design Editor and have had absolutely no problems with any it. I have used it with 3 or 4 of Auctiva's templates and formatted the text.

Based on your statements I take it you have filed a support ticket. What would happen if you created all new profiles making sure there was no left over html code? Then use one of Auctiva's standard templates and see if it doesn't work O.K.

Sure hope you get it worked out.
We use the best 3rd party editor out there.

Web pages were not meant to be HTML editors so they aren't good at it. That's why there are desktop software programs like Dreamweaver.

I haven't had trouble doing basic features in the editor. If you're looking to do something more fancy then a desktop application to create HTML would work better, then you can copy and paste in the HTML it generates.
The thing is Jeff, I'm not doing anything other than using some various fonts, sizes and colors. That's it! No pictures in the description text. No graphics, other than a couple of horizontal lines.

As I said before, what I end up doing is going into Word, set up the text the way I want it and do a copy/paste into the editor. I make darn sure I don't let the editor do the cleanup on the text and then I do a preview.

For the most part this works. The only consistent glitch is the justification doesn't come over from the Word setup. Everything is centered. So I have to go select the text I want left justified in the editor and reselect left justify. It doesn't change the justification in the editor display but it does when the text is previewed. One other thing that happens which is odd, if I copy text from a web page, say some information on a product, and paste it into the editor, there is no way to get that text to left justify. Regardless of what I do it will always stay centered even if it was justified originally.

These are all just weird things that I don't think should be happening. I have a somewhat usable workaround but it sure would be nice to just go into a saved listing right in Auctiva and make the changes there and post without having to go into word and redo it all there.

Anyway, that's what I'm doing. Nothing special. Just typing letters.
Hi,

Sticking my nose in here. I was a complete newbie to Auctiva, yet managed to successfully list nearly 30 items with it.

Could your wordprocessing program be; corrupted?
non-standard fonts and settings? Though I don't understand why the same problem shows up in Auctiva.

This is ordinary text you are having problems with, not HTML?

If HTML, then not a lot of help, there then. Only to suggest that Notepad is a better option than Word for coding.

Sorry couldn't be more helpful,

K.
Along these same lines of thought, I also noticed a problem cutting and pasting between Word and Auctiva. I was working up another set of Seller Details and in the process copied some text from a saved Seller Details profile into Word (the transfer was only "mostly" successful) and then back into a new Seller Details design editor, without changes on my part. When I previewed the result, the text color had changed. I tried to restore the color in the Seller Details design editor but couldn't change it, and the HTML was radically altered from the original too.

As a test, I did the same thing with Notepad and just restored the formatting in Auctiva, since only plain text without formatting was copied, and everything came out just peachy, with no HTML corruption or strange artifacts.

My inexpert conclusion is that Word's formatting code is not really compatible with Auctiva's design editors and cutting and pasting operations between the two is simply not reliable. I certainly don't believe that this incompatability means that Auctiva's listing editor is "a piece of @*#&!". Seems a little harsh in light of the evidence. In fact, using that logic, you could just as easily say that Word was "a piece of @*#&!". When used as intended, Auctiva's lister has worked just fine for me.

Well, I've been playing with the editor some more and I think I have it figured out...kind of.

First off, you MUST use the full size editor if you are going to make ANY changes. Doing so in the little window in the listing input screen will just mess things up. So before you do anything switch to the fullscreen editor.

Next, one of the problems I was having was the blank lines between paragraphs would disappear when I previewed. I could put a hundred carriage returns in and the thing would move the paragraphs back together. The fix? A single space in the blank line. That's it. Hit the spacebar once and the blank line stays. This is also true for the justification problem I was having. Whatever I set it at in the full size editor is what it shows in the previews. This is totally different than what happens if you use the small editor.

I've actually set up about a dozen listings in the past few days by going in and creating similar listings from saved ones. I've done all of the editing in the FULL SIZE editor and it has works without a hitch.

It seems clear to me that the key here is the full size editor. For whatever reason, that one and the small window editor in the entry page are not one in the same. This may be something Auctiva wants to investigate too.

Like I said, all i was entering was text with a few different fonts and colors. No photos or graphics. But now it looks like I can live with it and bypass the whole cut and past routine at last!
Hi Help,

I'm glad you got your problem worked out. I know how one can become frustrated with something that is supposed to work, but doesn't.

Personally, however, I have never used the Full Size Editor. I have only used the Design Editor and have never had any problems.

The main thing is, you have found something that works for you. Congratulations!! Smile
