The first named storm of the season is here. T.D. 1 is now Tropical Storm Alberto.

The storm is forecast to make landfall on the Florida peninsula Tuesday morning with 50 mph winds. The Tampa Bay region remains in the cone of uncertainty.

As the tropical storm approaches, heavy rain is creeping towards us from the south.

A Flood Watch is up for all of us from 4pm today through Tuesday morning. 4 to 8 inches of rain is possible with the approaching tropical storm.

Mornin wahm, I lived in Orlando for a few years and in New Port Richey for a few more. Been all across FL many times over(job). Many is the time I have seen a house in that state with water up to the roof. I once saw 9 tornado's dancing around in the sky. They werent big ones but I was scared and by some miracle between all of them the only thing that got damaged was someones shed. I like FL but I neer was crazy bout livin there...too many critters and bugs..lolol.
Lemme tell ya something...

I'm a many generations Floridian and many more generationed Southerner.

And I can bet there's no other place in the US that can state their mosquito's are as big as horses and will swoop right in and snatch up up. <smile> Suck you dry of every bit of blood you have. <wink>

I can handle the bugs..wait, lemme rephrase that..there are enough menfolk in my life to take care of the bugs for me. EWWWW!

It's the continued months of heat and humidity as the years go by that I find depleting of me.

As a born and raised Fl woman, I know when I need to batten down the hatches and hunker down AND when to evacuate. THANK GOODNESS!

I still have friends in condo's because they're home is on a waiting list to be repaired or they're rebuilding. There are still blue tarps on roofs from last seasons set of hurricanes. I had FOUR hurricanes Cat 4 go right through my backyard. We drove back into my old neighborhood and found that an old, old oak tree that once stood in our front yard was uprooted and was through the roof and into my what was once my daughter's room. SCARY THOUGHT!

Speaking of tornado's...I had one last year after one of the hurricanes past that was within 1 mile of my house.

The big thing I can say is this..At least with hurricanes, we know their coming, we are completely prepared and ready. It's tornados and earthquakes that scare the bejesus out of me! No notice of when those suckers are coming.

Keep us in your thoughts for the next months!
And did I hear there's an evacuation party at your house Wevatexan? <smile>

Take care, Donna

I live in the midwest (Nebraska) and Suthrnjewl is right, tornados can "just show up"....we have a bigggg siren down the street from us and when the weather is "threatening" they start to howl. Most of the tornados hit in rural areas and unless you have the radio or TV on, there is little warning. All you can do is watch the clouds and be prepared to take cover. A tornado can just drop out of the clouds, do it's damage and go back up into the clouds. After living here for 68 years, I can recognize the feel of the weather when there is a possibility for tornados....the sky takes on a yellowish look and things are spooky...birds are silent and the animals either mill around or huddle together.

A mega tornado hit Omaha in about 1975 and I still have memories of the damage it caused....and how scared I was for my family. It wiped some areas down to the ground. I always wondered what happened to the stoves, freezers, furniture, etc. that those homes had in them....you never read about a refrigerator landing in someone's yard....however, we did pick up office files and cancelled checks from several companies located miles from us.

What do you do when you have listings on EBAY or an auction site and you know your electricity may be out? What if you have a sale and can't contact the buyer?

Or, if you have an online store (vstore or ecrater for instance), and you plan to take a vacation for a week or so.

We'll keep you all in our prayers...

I started a thread (in The Lounge I believe) asking for a gif or jpg for just such an occasion....Wahm and Suthern both replied with some. You can add it to listngs (if you're able to edit them) and to your eBay storefront page so that people know (or should know, anyway) why you're out of touch for a while.
well wahm, i am guessing you are gulf coast! i'm on the east coast here so it just *looks* crappy, but nothing's really going on here. i have a friend (really!) in port charlotte, tho, and the last couple of years have been hard over there! and my step-sis-in-law is in pensacola, so when it 'goes panhandle' i know she's sweatin'.

I'd rather have the warning of a hurricane over the suddenness of a tornado or earthquake any day! i'm already stocked on water! lol Wink

here's hopin' everyone stays dry! Wink

The projected path has also shifted more to the north of FL and away from my area. Anyone north of Tampa?

lookin' bad for where I'm at Danielle.

Well I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers, stay safe. I think flooding will be the major concern with this one!

Yes, mab I'm on the gulf coast, Venice to be exact - just north of Pt Charlotte.

Had a few good bands come through with heavy rain and winds. Sad to say I am NOT stocked up, today was my shopping day and needless to say I'm not taking two small children out in this so DH will pick some stuff up on his way home.

We should be fine here but then again you never know what these things will do at the last minute!

Of course we are under the tornado watch and every now and then it turns into a warning. I've been here almost 19 years and haven't witnessed one yet and I hope I never do. They scare me!

I agree a hurricane you have plenty of warning to get out of harms way but a tornado or earthquake, well BOOM there it is with no warning Eek
