Seems to me that on the trip across the pond to discover new lands quite a few letters were lost from words at sea, not surprisng would have been a long and rough trip in those days.

A little different meaning over here. Skivvies is a term I picked up in the Navy. It means "men's underwear" ie your shorts! As in:
