Great article! I will never get past the fact that ebay is double dipping in my pocket. I was really frustrated until i read the part about how people purchase more when given the option to pay with credit. My business since surly kicked in. So even if ebay is taking a little more out of my pocket. they are just one online sales channel.

I liked this comment:
Communicate directly to the buyer when payment is received and when the item is shipped. While this doesn't directly apply to the collection of payment, it will go a long way to helping you encourage a future purchase from the buyer and ensuring that future transactions can flow as smoothly as the first.

What I don't understand is why neither eBay nor Auctiva automate the "Item Posted" email. I have a custom one I send from Auctiva, but I have to mark items posted, then select those transactions again to notify the buyer, which is slow & allows errors to creep in.
Complete BS by eBay. The way around this issue is to use the Pick and Pay option and just tell the buyer to e-mail. I also say I welcome any type of payment so, bid. If eBay comes back after I said this statement, it really will urk me more. You also can't avoid people asking about sending checks. What all of us sellers need to do is file a class action against eBay, but yet not enough of us will join and take them on. Legally, eBay is getting around the anti-competitive issue with respect to payments by using this pick-up and pay gimmick. Bad thing is the bulk of eBay sellers don't have a physical store front. Go to Auctiva Commerce if you want to sell things in a store fashion, but bear in mind it's new and will take a bit of time before people go there. If you price things like eBay stores or mark things higher because operating costs are cheaper = people won't come. Finally, regardless of where you sell - one has to advertise so, don't rely soley on Auctiva to do all the work. In closing, glad this artucle was written and again, am tired of eBay's BS!
WAKE UP. I'm not so sure ebay can enforce their latest policy. ebay has always said they are ONLY A VENUE. When ebay starts dictating how MY business accepts payments, THAT'S WHEN I FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH THE IRS FOR BUSINESS INTERFERENCE and ask the IRS to start taxing ebay on ALL of my profits, as an agent or partner!

I don't care what ebay's agreement says, anything contrary to law is unenforceable. PERIOD. So if California law, or any other state, allows businesses to accept cash and money orders then ebay is once again trying everything UNLAWFUL to pull the wool over our eyes YET AGAIN.

So we should all give ebay a dose of their own medicine and start sending them a 1099 at the end of the year on OUR PROFITS.

Two can play this game. CONTACT THE IRS. Verify your rights under your State Business License.
99 percent of my Ebay customers have always paid electronically. Nonetheless, I've been selling successfully on Ebay for 4 years and have had a poor year end selling season. Is it the economy? Partly. But it's also that Ebay customers are becoming more hesitant to buy there because they do not like the changes in Ebay's policies. If limits are placed on how they can pay, they just won't buy, it doesn't matter if it doesn't really affect most people. People are creatures of habit, when you change things, they will change too, but most likely AWAY FROM whatever it was made them change, and will form new buying habits where they perceive things to be a smoother experience. I live in the state where Circuit City is headquartered, a prime example of what happens to a company when you don't listen to your customers. CC's complacency in a changing economy, combined with their often contradictory policies were major nails in the coffin for them. As sellers, we can easily adapt to the mandate changes. But--- what will our customers do?
SuzyM, ebay has been on the decline for a while now precisely because of the way they treat people. In the early days ebay was good, lots of fun, very successful. But ebay's greed and ego got in the way, and they got to a point where they felt they could play God and call all the shots and take advantage of all of us in every possible way. I've moved 90% of my business to other websites with much much much lower fees, costs and regulations.

If you are a seller you also know ebay stripped us of posting negative feedback on deadbeat bidders. Ebay is two-faced. Read their community values. Ebay promotes fraud and deceit by forcing us to remain silent on deadbeats, not to mention they probably violate my freedom of speech since buyers can neg me and I can't do the same.

The economy is indeed part of the problem, including ebay's ever escalating fees. Talk about bilking a seller, oh please. We pay extra if we want bold or highlighted text. Does that really cost ebay anymore money.

I would like to see EVERYONE boycott ebay for 30 days beginning March 1st. When ebay wakes up and smells the coffee and realizes they are NOTHING without sellers, only then will we get the respect, support and fair treatment we have deserved all along.

My ebay enterprise is limited now strictly to a few select items where I want national traffic, and as a way of advertisement for my other ventures.

Until ebay shows me they can LAWFULLY force the kind of payments I can accept, I will accept whatever payments I want. I have now made five requests of ebay to produce proof they have such control. Each response is completely evasive to the point of being laughable.

Remember, ebay is ONLY A VENUE!!!! But if they want to become my boss, well they can start paying their required portion of my federal, state and social security taxes.

Argue for your limitations and sure enough they are yours. Just because ebay says so, doesn't make it so. Virginia, there may be a Santa Clause, but not because ebay said so.
Are you "PEONS" tired of being controlled yet? So what will it take for you to realize there is a better way? When will you all finally wake up to realize there is life beyond eBay? Why not take a typical human response by condeming me and condeming eBay? That is after all what these types of posts are about, correct? I know I'm just a "PEON", but I dropped eBay last year already, So what is taking the rest of you "PEONS" so long to finally catch up?

Do something, would ya? Move already and get on with your life!

I agree, Jonathon. I think I hung on to Ebay longer than most. I've been fortunate and have never gotten negative feedback from my sellers. Though I did get a lower DSR (detailed seller report) a few times on shipping fees, even though I've always done Free Shipping! Actually, I have closed my Ebay store and my last listings are ending Sunday. I really don't want to be part of the whole mandate thing, power seller or not, it doesn't matter, I'm not making money anyway. Yes, I'm moving on!
I received this email and know a seller using this site. Perhaps this can be an alternative to other seller out there.
I've been on ebay for 10 yrs and have become frustrated with the fees and in my case and many others', limitations of selling certain brand names.I've been researching for viable alternatives for a long time and last weekend found a site that at least for now I am double listing on - because while the site has grown by 400% since september, there is no listing fee and your item stays up until it sells (which means you can just delete if it sells on ebay).It's a start up and my research gives me a lot of hope that we might have found something that is a viable alternative so we're not paying 10% or so in fees, or being limited, or being held captive by feedback, etc. I am sharing the info with buyers and sellers that I've had good experiences with to help build visibility and membership. Research for yourself-bonanzle dot com.Feel free to message me if you have any questions - it's nice to be in on the ground fl.
Not only have they attempted to restrict payments but they have also lost sellers and buyers at the same time. They deserve what they are getting. Come on over to www.Auctions8.com it is a new auction site that is growing from the Ebay Bleed. You can advertise any form of payment you like, and take back control of your sales and money reciepts. They offer PayPal but screw that noise. The site is run by X-Ebayers with years of Ebay selling experience. We got tired of Ebay's controlling ways. There are still premium seller postions open for the first 1000 viable sellers to sign up, but they are dwindling fast. You can email me at sedyoung@hotmail.com for more information.

I liked this guys article but he failed to mention the amount of theft going on with the forced PayPal SNAD scam and CC charge backs through paypal, they are becoming rampant. I will not risk my merchandise on Ebay any longer, nore will I turn my sales cycle over to some dolt in India playing keep my money. Have a good day Ebay lambs, there are greener pastures out there, and in the long run Ebay is gonna continue it's decline for the small to medium seller. It is what they want.
It matters not. My method for "managing the methodology" was simply to take my sales business elsewhere.
It is not only their new "electronic only" mandate...it is their attempt to regulate shipping charges to unreasonably low levels, making sellers 'eat' some or all of the shipping cost (increasingly expensive); it is their increase in other fees; it is their bogus "fee reductions" for those holding stores--i.e., they reduced listing fees, then more than made up for it with an increase in final-value fees; in short, they have strayed far from their roots, and have become unethical.
They are now widely known as "Fee-Bay!"

I keep my account open only so I can go in the chat rooms and visit with the nice folks I've met. For my sales, I list elsewhere online.
What I do instead of ask for paper or even say the word "Check" or "Money Order", I use the following Ebay link and give my customers directions down to the question that regards paper payments. I also make a point to tell them that it doesn't just refer to return customers. I don't break the rules this way and educate my customers that they can still pay with a check or MO if they so desire. Seems to be working!
I am going to just post this: It is DIRECT from the FEEPAY website.
Any customer still left can read it and decide for theirselves.
Natuarlly I will point out that Paypal is the method that I use.

What's changed with payments on eBay?
As of October 22, 2008, checks and money orders are no longer allowed as payment methods on eBay. All items appearing on eBay.com must be paid for using either:
PayPal
Credit or debit card payment to a seller (through a seller's Internet merchant account)
ProPay
Moneybookers (starting early February, 2009)
Paymate (starting early February, 2009)
Payment upon pickup

What should I do if a buyer demands to pay with checks or money orders?
We know that some buyers still want to pay with checks and money orders, even after this policy change went into effect. When this happens, explain to your buyers the benefits that come with electronic payments:
More secure payments
Faster delivery of their purchases
More protection in case anything goes wrong.
Some buyers may be anxious about online payments or may not have a bank account. In these cases, suggest that they try using a prepaid debit card. More information on prepaid debit cards can be found online through card providers such as Visa, MasterCard, and Green Dot.

What should I do if I have long-standing, repeat customers who insist on paying with checks or money orders, even after I explain the benefits of electronic payments and offer suggestions?
We know this may happen occasionally. A seller can accept check and money order payment from a buyer if (and only if) the buyer requests it. We will not take action against a seller who is trying to accommodate their buyer, complete a sale and be in compliance with the policy. Sellers cannot in any way solicit check or money order payment from a buyer. This is considered abuse of the payments policy. Remember also, you can refuse to accept these payment methods. If the buyer doesn't pay, you can file an unpaid item (UPI) complaint. Buyers who insist on paying with these prohibited payment methods in a UPI claim will lose the claim and will not be allowed to leave negative feedback.
See my earlier post above. When another entity imposes restrictions on you which directly affect how you conduct your business, which directly interfere with your income, and who in any way try to supervise or direct your business, can no longer call themselves a venue pursuant to the IRS Code. You become a statutory employee. I encourage all of you ebay sellers to immediately file a written complaint against ebay to the IRS for unlawful business interference and crossing the line of what they are allowed to do as a venue. OR

Just tell ebay where to go and come join us at etsy.com and bonanzle.com, where the real sellers have gone.

Stop lining ebay's wallet in the Nazi Camp they are running. Take care of yourself, wise up and move on. Get yourself in google and tell your customers where to find you - just don't use the ebay messaging system to do it.
Money orders are the only way to protect yourself against scam buyers on ebay.

Break your iPod?

Buy a replacement on eBay.

When the new one arrives, file a paypal complaint; item not as described.

Ship back the broken one, give paypal the tracking, free replacement!

~~~~~~~~~
I first became aware of this type of scam in 2002 when I was bidding on an old fishing reel. The bidding got nuts and hit $300. The item was worth about $100.
Why would someone bid it to $300?
Later I found out why, they filed a paypal complaint and shipped back an empty box. That was back when the seller could leave a negative and she did and let everyone know she'd been scammed with the empty return box trick; of course paypal gave the buyer a full refund.
The only way sellers can protect themselves from this type of scam is buy accepting money orders for the payment; now ebay has taken that away.
The door has been swung wide open for scammers.
1. No money orders.
2. No negative feedback.
3. 100% refund available through PayPal disputes. Just ship back an empty box and you can have a refund; time to do a little shoppingSmile
Anyone that sells anything on ebay worth more than a few bucks is a fool.
PosterCliff, here's a good one. A guy in England bought two first edition books from me. He had a book store in England. I had a buy it now for $99, but the guy who could have hit buy it now for $99, instead bid $400. He got the books, and relisted and resold them on ebay. AFTER he had resold the books he bought from me, and even had positive feedback on his sales, he then filed a paypal fraud claim against me, saying the items were not as described. I guess he thought since he was in England I couldn't do anything about it. And did I mention he stole my initial photos for his listings.
Paypal immediately withdrew $400 from my account, causing me to be overdrawn and froze my bank account. Of course I gave paypal proof of the fraud and his subsequent listings. Paypay did NOTHING.
My only saving grace was I emailed him and told him I was making a claim against him for theft for stealing my photos, and showed him where I had tracked his sales of my books. He got scared and immediately withdrew his claim. I got lucky, but most people don't get this lucky.
Money orders are fine, but you are crazy if you don't verify them before cashing them. Fake and altered money orders may be one of the biggest scams on the internet. I call and verify every single money order I get.
Tis true, ebay actually promotes and encourages fraud with their Nazi policies. Too many ebayers just think because ebay makes a policy, they can do it. Right now the only reason I am not pursuing a new class action lawsuit against ebay is because I say, screw them. I don't need the hassel. It's just easier to move on with my business and leave ebay to those desperate fools who are too afraid to try something new and believe ebay has the right to own their soul.
Hi everyone.
As a seller or a business owner you must be able to choose your payment methods.
Unfortunately, that is not possible with ebay.
If you are not sure how to run your store, prepared to pay incredibly high fees just to list, can not make your own decisions, be accountable for the consequences because of minimal experience and knowledge stay with eBay.
But, many sellers do want to make their own choices.
At www.auctions8.com you are able to manage your store exactly the way you want.
As a VIP you are eligible to List, Relist and Sell unlimited items forever.
Our offer is for "Limited Time" only
The site is owned and managed by community of experienced sellers to create a safe and a permanent venue.
Many thanks and our warmest welcome to those already joined up. You will not be disappointed.
Thanks
With Ebay's PayPal mandate you have lost control of your sales cycle. You don't have the money they do, even if you think you have the money and have spent it or disbursed it, under PayPal you could get a charge back or Snad claim. Come on over to www.auctions8.com if you want to control your sales cycle again. You chose the payment mode and protect that valuable item you have with a MO or Personal Check... So far we have had 7 Premium sellers sign ups from this blog since yesterday.
Paypal has allowed the dishonest buyer to put on his deceit suit and come out to play. If a person who buys your stuff is dishonest the least temptation they have is an invite to rip you off. Dig it.
Premium Memberships are dwindling fasts. We are over 820 and and there only 1000 available. Membership includes free basic listing fees for life, plus a store.. no charge also.. you must maintain 20 active listings. You get a 1000.00 site bucks credit for enhanced auctions and you are considered a premium member with charitable voting rights. We give 50% of site profits to charity. Many more advantages but you need to read our site and see what we are doing. Snoozers will be losers here if you procastinate.
sedyoung@hotmail.com for questions. Good luck eBay lambs. Don't list nothing worth a bunch on Ebay you may be sorry.
